Cancion del Pueblo - Song of the People
Just a few days after the devastating wildfire in Bédar and Los Gallardos, myself, Janet Franklin and Natalia Berger were having coffee at The Corner Bar in Bédar and were talking about how amazing and brave their local policeman and fireman Diego and Raul had been. Suddenly, a woman at the next table said “I hope you don’t mind but can I ask you if you live here…I am a journalist from The Times but don’t worry I am not interviewing you”. During part of the conversation I told her that we were all heavily involved with the local drama group, The Indalo Players who have been performing for 30 years and have raised lots of money for local charities. Yet again, a few days later, an article appeared in The Times quoting that The Indalo Players were putting on a show to raise money for the communities after the devastating fire! That is not what was said. What can we do? Well...guess we have to take action!
Within hours, they had The Vera Voces and The Azurita Bédar Theatre Group on board and together they started to plan an evening of entertainment alongside other special invited guests. There will be classical music, opera, instrumentals, drama, comedy and rock and roll! Presented in Spanish and English and the money raised will go to those affected by the wildfire.
The organisers are also approaching various establishments to get sponsorship which will cover the costs of designing and printing the poster, tickets and programmes and to also provide stock to The Bédar Band who will sell refreshments. All these proceeds and further donations will be added to the final amount collected. After the event the public will be informed of the grand total and exactly where the money will be distributed.
SONG OF THE PEOPLE/CANCION DEL PUEBLO will be performed in October at The Maruja Cintas Theatre in Bédar on Friday 16 at 20:00 and Sunday 18 at 16:30 and The El Espacio Cultural Theatre in Los Gallardos on Saturday 17 at 20:00. There is plenty of parking at both venues. Tickets are €10 and can be purchased from:

A HUGE "THANK YOU" TO YOU!
The Indalo Players would like to “THANK YOU” the public for helping them help others. At their annual AGM, profits raised from productions during 2025 allowed them to allocate 1000€ to both The Turre and Vera Food Banks and 500€ to Stepping Stones.
The most expensive cost when staging a production is hiring lights at local theatres, which can reach an astonishing amount of 3000€. Costumes, props and set building are covered by the group but thankfully because of the amazing audiences who came to see Agatha Crusty And The Village Hall Murders plus The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Indalo Players could make this generous donation to local charities. They always welcome new members and definitely need more men for future plays.
The Turre Food Bank currently has 130 families registered with them. The Vera branch 385. Thankfully local supermarkets supply perishable items with an expiry date like meat, fish, vegetables, yogurts and bread. However, money is required to provide products like milk, rice, flour, eggs, pasta, oil, beans and tins of tuna. Donations also allow the charities to supply baby milk and food, diapers and personal things like toothbrushes and soap. The Turre Food Bank would especially like to thank the Sewing Circle who for many years have knitted jumpers and blankets, etc plus lovingly crafted Christmas Gifts for the children.
Stepping Stones supports families who are dealing with Alzheimer’s. Their donation will subsidise excursions, weekly meals and help when sudden care is required.
